Scope

This tutorial covers the process to set up a POP3 email account in Microsoft® Outlook for Windows XP.

For setting up your email account in other email programs, please refer to the Tutorial overview.

Requirements

In order to use your email account with Outlook, you will need the following information which can be obtained from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Web Hosting Provider.
SiriuS clients have received this information in their welcome email. If you lost the information, please contact us and we will resend the required inormation ASAP (SiriuS clients only).

You will need the following information:

  • your email address
  • your account name (for SiriuS clients that is the same as your full email address)
  • your email password
  • the incoming mailserver(POP3 or IMAP) address
  • the outgoing mailserver (SMTP) address

Setting up your email account

Start Outlook. Go to Start - All Programs. Locate Outlook and click it.

Click on Tools and select E-Mail Accounts

In the E-Mail Accounts window check the option: 'Add a new e-mail account' and click 'Next'.

In Server Type window check the option 'POP3' and click 'Next'.

In this window you enter all the required settings: Your Name, E-Mail Address,
User Name, Password, Incoming mail server (POP3) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP).
Please refer to your welcome email for these settings.
When you're done click on 'More Settings'.

Here you can enter a name for your new email account, f.i. 'Work'.
Next click on the 'Outgoing Server' tab.

In the Outgoing Servers window SiriuS clients need to check the box 'My server outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
Check the welcome email from your ISP to find out if your outgoing mail server requires authentication.
When you're done, click 'OK'.

Back in the Email accounts window click on 'Test Account Settings'.
Before you do this, make sure your computer is connected to the internet!

Outlook is now carrying out five tests.
If everything went like it should, all five tests are completed succesfully.
Click on 'Close' to continue.
If one or more tests failed, check if your internet connection is working:
Go to a website by using your internet browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer etc.)
If the internet connection is working, check the settings you just entered and correct any mistakes.

You're done! Click on 'Finish' to return to Outlook

After you click 'Send/Recieve' from the menu, a test message should appear in your inbox.
